Reckon, a poem

My family brings me up
Bright and Beautiful

My family moves and loses
members of it's ranks
Beautiful and Bright they were
One's gone off to fight tanks
And another off to college
And one day I watch Father of the
Bride and I hate every man that might marry
away my dear sister

My family brings me up
Foolish they are my own
Blood in my veins must mean
They'll share my pains, I'm lean
And skeletal and far away

My family sails th'Atlantic
And I'm a child no longer they fear
Detestable in taste and sight
"But blood will keep us near
Though we will cough and wish to spit
Hoping you were not our own"
A changeling I can't make me be
Wearing us all to the bone

It is fear that drives them now
They've spent their whole life through
Teaching themselves that Family's best
But Mother and Father had other families that are
Less important now

And here's what I'm saying:
"Why should I spend and invest in a ship
That is sinking
And you all know it"
And they say back:
"You're wrong"
And they yell back:
"Why would you say that?"
And they scream back:
"I didn't build this ship just so that
I'd drown alone."
But then they're weeping
Because the water is inside them
And the ship is already leaking.
